How a run works

Each prompt starts in either English or Cantonese. Three road signs present possible translations, and you move the cab into the lane with the correct answer. The next prompt may reverse the direction, so recognizing a Cantonese word is not enough: you also practice retrieving it from an English cue.

The answer choices come from the same lesson category. A direction word is tested against other direction words, for example, rather than against unrelated food or school vocabulary. That keeps each decision meaningful while the pace adds pressure.

  • Read or hear the prompt.
  • Choose the lane carrying its translation.
  • See the correct word, Jyutping, and meaning after the answer.
  • Complete 30 vocabulary attempts to finish a route.

Five routes, one connected curriculum

The current curriculum contains 30 unique items on each route. Victoria Peak introduces descriptions, directions, and foundations. Cross-Harbour Tunnel moves through school, work, and time. Sai Kung covers food, local dishes, and the market. San Francisco Chinatown adds conversation, everyday actions, and finding places. New York Chinatown finishes with taxi language, navigation, and destinations.

Victoria Peak is the free route. Full City Access unlocks the other four routes across Hong Kong, San Francisco, and New York.

What Canto Cab is designed to practice

Canto Cab focuses on fast vocabulary recognition and two-way recall. Traditional Chinese, Jyutping, English meanings, and audio give each word several useful cues. Repeated decisions help turn passive familiarity into something you can retrieve more quickly.

It is supplemental practice, not a complete language course or a speech test. The game does not grade your pronunciation, teach every grammar pattern, or promise fluency. It is built to make a compact beginner vocabulary more memorable and more fun to revisit.
